Thompson is a quiet place with good schools, progressive government, a rich history, and a rural character. It has the advantage of being strategically located on the Massachusetts border.

Thompson's three public schools are housed in an educational complex on Route 12. The Mary R. Fisher Elementary School houses Kindergarten through grade four, the Thompson Middle School accommodates grades five to eight and Tourtelotte Memorial High School completes the educational process. In addition to the town's public schools are St. Joseph's, a private, parochial elementary school, and Marianapolis, a private college preparatory school.

Thompson is fortunate to have a very active Recreation Department that oversees many activities and events. Quaddick State Park provides many recreational opportunities for Northeastern Connecticut. There are facilities for swimming, picnicking, fishing and boating. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains the West Thompson Dam Recreation Area. There are wooded campsites and picnic shelters ready for group reservations. The recreation area also has a public boat ramp and a 200 acre lake to enjoy fishing. Riverside Park has a paved walking/biking trail along the French River for the community to enjoy.
