Many historic buildings and landmarks exist in Pomfret and are preserved for future generations to view and enjoy. Pomfret is a great place to live and many of its families have been there for generations.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Pomfret has experienced a change from being strictly rural agricultural to being rural residential with approximately 14 farms left, of which five are dairy. There are some thriving industries in Pomfret which ship food, fiber optics, wire cable and forest land products world-wide and provide employment for Pomfret residents.
EDUCATION
Pomfret Community School is an excellent institution which serves children from kindergarten through the eighth grade. Students then have the option of attending several area high schools including Woodstock Academy, Putnam High School or Killingly High School. For those students interested in a technical high school, Harvard H. Ellis Regional Vocational Technical School is another option. Two private schools are also located in Pomfret. The Rectory School is for students in grades 6 through 9 and Pomfret School is a prepatory school for students in grades 9 through 12.
RECREATION
The State of Connecticut maintains Mashamoquet State Park, large recreational park in Pomfret with swimming and camping facilities. Many weekly events are scheduled throughout the summer in the park for families to enjoy. Pomfret residents are also able to enjoy hiking, fishing and horseback riding along the park trails. The Pomfret Rod and Gun Club has facilities for hunting, fishing, skeet and trap fields, as well as pistol and rifle ranges. The Windham County 4-H Camp is also located in Pomfret and provides programs for youngsters during the summer.
The town of Pomfret has just completed a new recreation park. It contains a full size ball field and a full size soccer field with more recreational facilities being planned.
