Plainfield offers the hospitality of a small rural town. It consists of four villages: Moosup, Wauregan, Plainfield, and Central Village. Many large and small farms exist in the rural areas of the town. Many of these farms are third generation.

Plainfield welcomes and encourages business and industry to locate in its town. Both Interstate 395 and the Providence and Worcester Railroad provide easy access to commercial and industrial areas. The Economic Development Commission manages Plainfield's Industrial Park and is happy to assist any new or expanding businesses.

Two elementary schools, Moosup Elementary School and Sheppard Hill Elementary School, educate children from Pre-K to grade five. Plainfield Memorial School and Plainfield Central School complete their elementary school education. The new Plainfield High School completes their secondary education.

A variety of programs are offered by the Plainfield Recreation Department. The department also sponsors after-school and evening programs during the school year, and full-day programs during the summer. An indoor swimming pool is open for recreational swim and special classes. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months at the town beach at Moosup Pond.
